Restoration of historic heritage

Churches, chapels, castles, museums and listed buildings demand non-destructive solutions that are compatible with conservation. Geo Portugal brings together the best of two technologies: Smart·Geo Box® and the Remmers range.

The heritage challenge

Damp, salt efflorescence and dirt in historic buildings

Churches, chapels, monasteries, manor houses, castles, museums and wine cellars were built in stone and masonry, without any capillary break. As a result, water from the ground rises up the walls and concentrates at the base, bringing salt efflorescence (saltpetre), salt crystals, mould and the decay of renders, frescoes and stonework.

In these buildings, invasive treatments — drilling, resin injection or blast cleaning — can cause irreversible damage to the stone and the decorative work. Conservation demands non-destructive and reversible methods that are compatible with the requirements of listed-heritage restoration in Portugal.

Geo Portugal brings together three complementary solutions — drying rising damp with Smart·Geo Box®, cleaning façades with the Remmers Arte Mundit peel-off paste and protecting the stone with the Funcosil FC water repellent — to bring the building back to life without harming it.

Three steps to bring the building back to life

A complete approach that respects the stone, the vaults and the decorative work — without harming the old building.

1. Dry — Smart·Geo Box®

Treats rising damp without drilling or building work. Discreet and self-powered, it lets the wall dry out while respecting the building.

2. Clean — Arte Mundit

A peel-off cleaning paste, without water: it is applied, dries and is removed as a film, taking the dirt with it.

3. Protect — Funcosil FC

Façade water-repellent cream: an invisible barrier against rain that keeps the wall breathing.

Arte Mundit — cleaning without water, without harm

A peel-off cleaning paste (“apply and remove”), solvent-free, for the dry cleaning of delicate and valuable surfaces.

  • Forms a film that binds the dirt; it is removed as a film once dry
  • No water and no solvents — ideal for delicate interiors and exteriors
  • Natural stone, marble, concrete, brick, render, plasterwork and sculptures
  • Effective on dust, soot and fire residues

Rain protection · Remmers

Funcosil FC — façade water-repellent cream

A water-repellent impregnation in cream form, silane-based, that protects porous façades from driving rain without altering their appearance.

  • The cream form extends the contact time and penetrates deeper
  • Repels water but lets the wall breathe (vapour diffusion)
  • For porous mineral materials: stone, brick, renders
  • Improves frost resistance; resistant to UV and alkalis

Insulating without disfiguring · Isoltech Green

Correcting the façade's thermal performance — without panels

Once the wall has been dried, cleaned and protected, the Isoltech Green system corrects the façade's thermal performance with a 100% natural thermo-active mineral render (Pro-Tech®), applied without panels and in a thin coat, with a Techdekor Green finish.

It is the ideal solution for heritage: it insulates without covering the façade with boards, preserving the stone, the reliefs and the architectural reading of the building. With a strong presence in Portugal.

  • No panels — preserves the appearance of the façade
  • Mineral and thin-coat — respects the old building
  • Treats thermal bridges continuously, without altering reliefs

Pro-Tech® + Techdekor Green

  • Pro-Tech® — 100% natural thermo-active mineral render
  • Applied directly onto stone, masonry and old renders
  • Techdekor Green — a finish that keeps the façade's relief

Compatible with conservation

Why heritage chooses non-destructive

Old buildings — in stone, without any capillary break — cope poorly with invasive treatments. These solutions respect the building and the requirements of conservation.

Without drilling

No drilling, cutting or injection into the stone and the stonework.

Without aggressive water

Dry cleaning that preserves frescoes, plasterwork and fragile surfaces.

Breathes

Water-repellent protection that maintains the wall's vapour diffusion.

Discreet

Solutions that are invisible to the visitor and compatible with listed buildings.

Partnership

Smart·Geo Box® · Remmers · Isoltech Green

The restoration range brings together the best of three solutions: the Smart·Geo Box® technology for the non-destructive drying of walls, the partnership with Remmers (a leading German manufacturer in heritage conservation and restoration) to clean and protect, and the Isoltech Green system — panel-free façade thermal correction, with a strong presence in Portugal.

Frequently asked questions

Heritage restoration: your questions

How do you treat rising damp in a church or old building without building work?

Smart·Geo Box® treats capillary rise in a non-destructive way — without drilling, without resin injection and without chemicals in the wall. That makes it suitable for churches, chapels and listed buildings, where preserving the stone and the renders is essential.

Is it possible to clean stone façades without water or abrasive blasting?

Yes. The Remmers Arte Mundit peel-off paste cleans dry: it is applied, dries and is then removed as a film, taking the dirt with it — without water, without solvents and without abrasion. Ideal for stone, marble, plasterwork and sculptures.

Does the water-repellent treatment change the appearance of the stone?

No. Funcosil FC is a water-repellent cream that repels rainwater but lets the wall breathe (vapour diffusion), without forming a film or altering the natural appearance of the material.

Are the solutions compatible with listed buildings and monuments?

Yes. All the solutions are non-destructive and discreet, respecting heritage conservation requirements — without drilling, without aggressive water and invisible to the visitor.

What kind of buildings are these solutions used on?

Churches, chapels, monasteries, manor houses, castles, museums, wine cellars and old stone or masonry homes, in mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.
